Hi Ian,

You need a combustion leak detector - you should be able to pick one up at most any auto parts store. You fill it with the special fluid and attach it in place of the radiator cap; run the engine and squeeze the bulb on the tester. If the solution changes color, combustion gases are getting into the cooling system. Most of the time this indicates a bad head gasket, but a cracked head or cylinder block could also be the cause.
