Default 2001 Ford Escape Shift cable replacement How to

How do you get to, and release the "release tabs" shown in diagram (pg7B-3 illustration 4.5 item(b))? Is there a specialty tool required?

    Hi Leonard,

No, no specialty tool is required. You can push the tabs in with a screwdriver, squeeze them with a pair of needle-nose pliers, or, after the cable has been disconnected from the lever, a box-end wrench of the appropriate size can be run up the cable (the wrench will push the tabs in). If you can't find something that will work, you can unbolt the bracket from the transaxle, which will allow you to see how the cable is retained and give you better access.
