Default 2000 Protege - Electrical dies when key is turned

I have a 2000 Mazda Protege. I got home after driving it for about 60 minutes, without any problems. After about 15 minutes of sitting, my wife went to start the car and it would not turn over. I found that when the key is turned all the way, to the point where it would normally engage the starter, all of the dashboard lights turn off, and it seems like the car is being completely drained of all power. There is also a clicking or flickering sound coming from under the dash, on the right side. Also, after attempting to start it, power door locks stop working for a couple of minutes (pressing on the lock or unlock button will cause a clicking sound, as if they are trying to work, but don't have enough power).

I read about similar symptoms on Toyotas and Hondas, related to the ignition starter switch, but replacing it on this car has done nothing. Can anybody point me in the right direction?

It could be a loose ground on your starter or the ground on your battery.
