    Default Changing break pads with ABS system

    I have a 2005 Chrysler Town & Country, with ABS, and concerned about damaging the ABS sytem when changing the break pads. The Haynes manual says to just "push the piston back into the bore using a C-Clamp....and the fluid in the master cylinder will rise" I heard/read on the internet that this could cause damage to the ABS system. Can someone please clarify.

    Hi wusuwus08,

    You can go ahead and follow the procedure in the Haynes manual without worrying about damaging your ABS system.

    Some mechanics come from the school of thought that by pushing the pistons back into their bores, contaminants in the system will be forced up into the ABS hydraulic actuator and foul the valves. They advocate connecting a bleeder hose to the caliper bleeder and opening the bleeder as the piston is pushed back. There's nothing wrong with doing this, but there's always the chance that air could be admitted into the system. For this reason the brakes should be bled if this method is used. Furthermore, there's no guarantee that ALL of the fluid being displaced by the caliper piston will exit the bleeder hose; some of it will flow upstream towards the ABS actuator anyway.

    The factory service manual doesn't advocate that method, and here in our workshop at Haynes, we've never had a problem with an ABS system after pushing the caliper pistons into their bores, as your manual instructs.
