    Default 97 Volvo 850R motor swap

    today i started prepping to pull the old motor out and install a newer motor. i was using my manual but due to my lack of knowledge of the car and what seems like my manuals lack of illustrations i am left scratching my head on a few items. Are there any illustrations in the manual that show the exact position of the mounting bolts and what exactly has to be removed? i think i have covered everything as far as the top of the motor and i wanted to double check before i start underneath the car.

    Hi 97850R,

    Take a look in chapter 2A, illustration 13.5 - that will give you a good idea of what the engine and transaxle mounting points look like. As for other components that must be removed during removal of the engine/transaxle, you'll have to refer to other areas of the manual that deal with those components.

    You may have already thought of this, but it is very helpful to take photos as you work, for your own reference. It'll make the reassembly process easier, and the pictures will be specific to your vehicle and the various methods you chose to employ to carry out the work.

    I was told that i could remove the motor without removing the transmission, therefore eliminating the tasks that would be performed on the axle. How true is this and are there any possible issues that i may run into with only removing the motor?

    Hi again97850R,

    The factory recommended procedure is to remove the engine and transaxle together, so that's all I can really go by. Even if possible, it would probably be easier to remove the engine and trans as a unit, since there is very little room between the right side of the engine and the side of the engine compartment. You might want to confirm this with a Volvo specialist, but I'm sure he'd agree that it would be easier to remove them together.
