Default BMW F800GS Battery removal resets certain OBC information

Could an expert please advise me as to how the OBC (on board computer) stores information? Upon the refitting of the battery to my bike following the winter pause I was surprised to find that the information fields such as Trip 1 and Trip 2 had been reset to zero whilst the odometer showing total distance travelled on the bike remained intact. This would seem to suggest that the OBC uses two very different means of storing this information and is in conflict with my original thoughts that the OBC retains it's memory in flash. Any advice would be greatly appreciated - thank you.
