I have a 2001 Ford Escort ZX2. While changing the spark plugs, I found that when I removed the plug wires the was antifreeze (about 1 to 2 inches) around the spark plugs. What could be the cause of this?

Hi mjw,

You have an external coolant leak somewhere. These can be difficult to find, and they sometimes only show up when the engine is fully warmed up and the cooling system is under pressure. Check the coolant hoses in the area (the heater hoses may be routed near the spark plugs). Be sure to also check the underside of the hoses - sometimes hoses can leak on the bottom, where you don't see the problem. If you can't find the leak easily, take the car to a repair shop and have the system pressure-tested. This is a relatively simple procedure that is usually inexpensive.

Be sure to get Haynes manual #36024, which will help you with repairs.
