I've been driving my car with no problems til I started to hear a loud sound from underneath my car. When I turned on the engine my tail pipe that is connected to the catalytic converter and muffler, it snapped off.

I just bought a Catalytic converter a month ago and now I'm so upset because I'm on a fixed income and can't afford to really take it to a mechanic and now I'm stressing out. My boyfriend really doesn't want to work on the car because he finds it frustrating. the labor to fix it is probably going to cost me $60.00 and I know my family won't help me to pay to get it fixed.

I need my car to go to doctor's appointments, go food shopping every month I don't want to rely on anybody.I don't know what to do I wished I knew how to do it myself but I don't.

Hi ETP,

You need to find out where the exhaust system has failed. Did the bolts break at the catalytic converter flange, or did the pipe itself actually crack? If the pipe failed, you might be able to have a muffler shop (or someone else who is competent with a welder) fix it.

If there are any vocational schools or community colleges in your area that have automotive repair or welding courses, you might be able to get it fixed for free (provided no new parts are required). It's a great option for someone on a fixed income, and it will also provide a student with some real-world repair experience.

Good luck with that.
