Can anyone tell me how many pounds to torque the heads on a 1991 Subaru Legacy L. It is a 2.2 Single overhead cam.

Hi khefner,

Your vehicle is covered in Haynes manual no. 89100. The cylinder head bolt torque specs are on page 2A-3. The tightening procedure is fairly involved (8 steps, including two steps of loosening, two steps of specific number bolt tightening, and two steps of angle tightening). It would be a good idea to obtain the manual. The timing belt procedure is a little tricky too, so it would not be a good idea to guess when it comes to this job.

Thanks for your interest in Haynes!

Hi, thanks for the quick reply. We were concerned about the final torque to 132 inch pounds or 11 foot pounds on bolts 3 & 6. We wanted to make sure that was correct?

Hi again, khefner,

Keep in mind that 132 in-lbs is NOT the final torque, and it's not just on bolts 3 and 6, but on bolts 4 and 5, too. After that 132 in-lbs on those bolts, and the initial torque specs on bolts 1 and 2, there are two more angle torque steps. Be sure to follow the proper sequence (illustration 10.13 in Chapter 2A) and the proper tightening steps in the specifications on p. 2A-3.
