i retrieved the code it was 41 and check it out it says alternator field not switching properly and was what would cause it .

Hi night911us,

That code could mean the alternator is faulty, it could mean the powertrain control module is faulty, or it could mean that there's a problem in the circuit between the two.

I forgot to mention sometimes it charges and sometime it doesn't if this helps.

Well, that doesn't really help. It could be an internal problem with the alternator causing it to not charge when it should, but since the PCM figures into the scene it could be a problem with that. Probably the best thing to do at this time would be to have the charging system diagnosed by a pro equipped with the proper equipment. Electrical components are not returnable, so it can be quite costly to make a mis-diagnosis when dialing with electrical problems.

Just so you know, the alternator on your vehicle is not rebuildable, so if it is found to be at fault it'll have to be replaced as a unit.
