I have a 1992 Plymouth voyage with a 3.3, three speed automatic transmission. My problem is that when the motor and tranny are cold the tranny either slips out of gear and\or will not shift in to third. most of the time reving the engine will slip the tranny back into gear or shuting the engine off and restarting may also resolve it for the moment. As far as getting the tranny to shift into third, it is hit and miss.

Hi Joel,

The first thing to check would be the transaxle fluid level and condition. If that's OK, either the front clutch or the rear clutch could be slipping. If the transaxle also slips in Reverse, it would be the front clutch that's slipping. If it doesn't slip in Reverse, the rear clutch could be slipping.

If the fluid level is low, and if it looks dark and smells burned, it would be worth a try to do a fluid and filter change. If that doesn't clear things up, it's probably time to get inside of the tranny. At that point, have the problem diagnosed by a transmission specialist.

Good luck, and thanks for your interest in Haynes manuals!
