Haynes Team,

I was wondering if you had any good tips as to how you can test if a brake caliper is frozen? I've read a fair amount of Haynes manuals and checking for a frozen caliper is mentioned in troubleshooting sections, but never described in detail what to look for.

Thanks,

Hi FB14,

You could put the vehicle up on jackstands, then have an assistant depress the brake pedal while you try to turn the wheel. If you can still turn the wheel, the caliper is either frozen or it isn't getting the hydraulic pressure it needs. To find out which, open the bleeder valve; if the brake pedal goes down and fluid squirts out, you've got a frozen caliper.
